ACT is a college entrance test usually taken by juniors and/or seniors. Scores are added to the student’s transcript and sent to colleges when the student applies to colleges. ACT scores can determine if a student will be accepted to a college and/or awarded a scholarship through a college. In addition, ACT individual scores of 19 in reading, English, and math can determine if a high school student can take college classes at UHS. ACT composite score is used in the RAI calculation that the public state universities use as an acceptance criteria.
It’s recommended to take the ACT in the spring of your junior year – traditionally the April test date. I recommend taking the ACT twice – data shows students typically do at least a point or better on their cumulative score the second time they test 50 percent of the time. Colleges take the best score so doing worse doesn’t impact them.
Register here: www.act.org
You will be prompted to create an account. Students will need to know courses taken – ask Mrs. Kriz for a copy of your transcript.
Please have your scores sent to Union High School using the code 162-400. That way your scores can be added to your transcript.
**Study Guides/practice tests available in Counseling Office!
Cost: $68.00 (English, math & reading) $25.00 (Writing Add-On)* $4.00 (Science Add-On)
Late Registration Fee - Additional $40
*Check the ACT website to see if the colleges you are considering require or recommend the ACT Writing Test.
**If you cannot afford the test fee, check with Mrs. Kriz to see if you are eligible for a fee waiver.
***Any senior can apply to partner with the UNI Educational Opportunity Center for free and get one test waiver.

The SAT is a college entrance test usually taken by juniors and/or seniors. Scores are added to the student’s transcript and sent to colleges when the student applies to colleges. SAT scores can determine if a student will be accepted to a college and/or awarded a scholarship through a college. SAT scores can be used in the RAI calculation that the public state universities use as an acceptance criteria.
Should you take the ACT or SAT? Students can take either one; however, ACT is more often taken by students who live in Midwestern states and plan to attend a Midwestern college or university. SAT is taken more for the eastern or western coastal state colleges and universities. You should check to see which entrance test is preferred at the college/s you are considering to apply to. In addition, the ACT is administered at UHS and the SATs are not.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn't require you to recall specific facts from your classes.
The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:
- Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
- See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
- Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
- Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
Want to know more? Visit the PSAT/NMSQT's website here: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html
The PSAT/NMSQT test date at Union High School will be Thursdsay, October 16, 2025!
Cost to test is $18.00. Checks can be made out to UCSD. Juniors may be eligible for a fee waiver. Mrs. Kriz has shared with juniors if they are eligible for a fee waiver.
Registration must be done through Mrs. Kriz. Only grades 10 and 11 are able to take the PSAT. Registration and payment is due Wednesday, September 10 to Mrs. Kriz.
